Description

This 30-Minute Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak recipe delivers a quick and delicious version of the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Featuring a flavorful mix of ground beef, sautéed onions, and green bell peppers, topped with melted provolone cheese, and served in soft hoagie rolls, it’s perfect for a satisfying weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Ground Beef Mixture

  • 1 yellow onion (diced)
  • 1 green bell pepper (diced)
  • 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 oz provolone cheese

Sandwiches

  • 4 hoagie rolls 7” each (or 1 French baguette, cut into 4 pieces)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F to prepare for toasting the sandwiches later.
  2. Cook the beef mixture: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, ground beef, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and the beef is fully browned.
  3. Prepare the rolls: While the beef cooks, slice the hoagie rolls in half or cut the baguette into four 4-inch pieces and slice each piece in half. Place the rolls on a baking sheet to prepare for toasting.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce and cheese: Once the beef mixture is cooked, stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Lay half of the provolone cheese slices over the beef mixture and reduce heat to low. Allow the cheese to melt completely, about 3-4 minutes, then stir the mixture until combined.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches: Use tongs to evenly distribute the beef and cheese mixture onto the prepared rolls.
  6. Add more cheese and bake: Place the remaining provolone cheese slices on top of each sandwich. Bake them in the preheated oven for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and the rolls are lightly toasted.

Notes

  • Use 90% lean ground beef for less fat but good flavor and moisture.
  • Feel free to substitute provolone with American or mozzarella cheese for a different flavor.
  • To make the sandwich spicier, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes while cooking the beef mixture.
  • Serve with pickles or hot peppers for an authentic Philly cheesesteak experience.
  • If you prefer a crustier bread, use a baguette instead of hoagie rolls.
