Ingredients
Regular Bagels
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder (optional for extra fluffy bagels)
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 large egg (for the egg wash)
- Optional: Everything Bagel Seasoning, Sesame Seeds, Poppy Seeds
Gluten-Free Bagels
- 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons gluten-free baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 egg white, whisked until frothy (for the egg wash)
- Optional: Everything Bagel Seasoning
Instructions
- Mix the dough: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the Greek yogurt and mix using a fork, your hands, or a rubber spatula until the dough is wet but slightly crumbly with large doughy pieces.
- Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a well-floured surface and knead into a smooth ball. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces.
- Shape the bagels: Roll each piece into a 5-6 inch long, 3/4 inch wide log, then form into a circle, pinching the ends firmly to seal.
- Apply the egg wash: Mix the egg yolk with some water in a small bowl. Brush the egg wash over the top and middle of each bagel. Add toppings if desired.
- Preheat and prepare the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) and spray the basket with olive oil spray.
- Air fry the bagels: Place bagels in a single layer, about 2 inches apart, inside the air fryer basket. Cook for about 10 minutes, checking at 8-9 minutes to avoid excessive browning, until golden brown and cooked through.
- Cool before serving: Remove bagels and let them cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing and adding any additional toppings.
- Gluten-free variation: For gluten-free bagels, combine gluten-free flour, baking powder, salt, Greek yogurt, and whisked egg white. Mix until wet and crumbly, then proceed with shaping and air frying as above.
Notes
- For fluffier bagels, do not skip the baking powder in the dough.
- If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake these in a traditional oven at 375°F for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Make sure to pinch the ends tightly to prevent bagels from opening during cooking.
- Use olive oil spray or any neutral oil spray to prevent sticking in the air fryer basket.
- Check bagels at 8-9 minutes during air frying to avoid over-browning, as air fryer models vary.
- Allow bagels to cool before slicing to maintain their texture.
